Who else thinks that Erik Van Rooyen looks like Borat with that ridiculous moustache and those ankle grabbing pants? I imagine there are quite a few golfers wishing to stand out from the crowd, with all those caps and shirts emblazoned with sponsor logos. However, be careful what you wish for in terms of being a beacon for individuality on the golf tour. This golf viewer feedback segment is pretty positive so far in 2022. The DP World Tour, formerly the European Tour, is looking and sounding a lot better via the TV coverage with some new blood on the commentary team. For too long it was dead boring with old fuddy duddies droning on endlessly. Ali Whitaker is doing a great job and brings a breath of fresh air with her commentary.
Is Jason Day Back for Golf Fans?
Good to see Jason Day reappearing on the leaderboard after years in the wilderness with injury and loss of form. He still looks so young, and it would be great to see him notch another win real soon. Marc Leishman is thereabouts, and he should get another title this season as well. The Aussies on tour are all looking good, with Cam Smith winning big, and Lucas Herbert getting going too. Min Woo Lee should continue his rise this year as well. Will we see any new blood emerging on world tours this season?
Japan’s Maestro Hideki Matsuyama
Hideki Matsuyama’s victory with an eagle on the second playoff hole of the Sony Open was riveting viewing. What a player! I love the black and bright yellow final day outfit he wears. Watching Hideki drive the golf ball is a thing of power and beauty. I predict more big things from the Masters Champion this season. The golf viewer feedback page gives Hideki the big thumbs up.
Luke List was a deserving winner over Will Zalatoris in a playoff at Torrey Pines. Zalatoris will win plenty real soon.
What about Victor Hovland, my favourite Norwegian golf superstar! This young golfer looks like a gymnast and hits the ball like a Norse god. My tip is for Victor to win a major this year. Rory McIlroy performed well up until the last couple of holes on a difficult course in Dubai. The tragedy of golf claimed another victim with Rory going for the green in 2 on the final hole and plonking it in the water to lose by 1. I asked myself what I would have done in that situation and laying up seemed the only sensible thing to do. Of course, I’m not Rory, but the way that course was playing with hard greens I couldn’t see the percentage in hitting a 267 yard 3 wood when laying up took all the risk out. Richard Bland was a hero for us old guys and did incredibly well to make the playoff.
